OFA in Cuba – Learning from the Caribbean’s Coastal Guardians

We recently traveled to Cuba to study how local experts manage mangrove ecosystems and marine life within one of the most iconic marine parks in the Caribbean – The Queen’s Garden (Jardines de la Reina) 🐠🌱

Supported by the CIEC – Coastal Ecosystems Research Center, this immersive visit took place in a 2,100 km² Marine Protected Area established over 30 years ago along Cuba’s southern coast.

Onsite, OFA worked hand-in-hand with dedicated park protectors, gaining first-hand insight into the management of mangrove forests and seagrass meadows; two critical habitats for ocean health and coastal resilience.

🌍 We believe there should be no exclusivity in saving the oceans. Conservation must be a shared mission; built on open exchange of knowledge, collaboration, and mutual learning across borders.

This inspiring collaboration gave us valuable ideas and techniques that we look forward to adapting to our seagrass restoration work in Phuket 🇹🇭💚
