Continued success with the Phuket Marine Biological Center

At OFA we are very lucky to collaborate with the highly respected Phuket Marine Biological Center (PMBC).

They carry out, tirelessly, research and conservation on marine an coastal ressources in the Andaman sea and the gulf of Thailand to educate young generation and the public regarding the importance of protecting our fragile marine ecosytem.

OFA is actively working on its pilot projet of coral restoration/research in controlled environment.

Pollution,ocean temperature rising and other human related factors have degrated the coral reefs.

WHY ARE CORAL REEFS SO IMPORTANT?

ECOSYSTEM BALANCE: Coral reefs are home to more than 25% of all marine life.

FOOD RESSOURCE: More than 500 million people depend on coral reefs directly in terms of fishery.

COASTAL PROTECTION: An healthy Coral reefs reduce 97 percent of wave energy and serve as natural marine barriers that protect coastal communities from strong waves during hurricanes and tsunamis.

MEDICAL RESEARCH: Coral organisms are of great interest to be observed in the search for treatments for certain cancers, bone grafts…

TOURISM ECONOMY: Coral reefs provide a livelihood for millions of individuals it represents billions of dollars each year
